Rodney K. Workman is the Director of Bands at Asheville High School where he conducts the Wind Symphony and Marching Band and also assists the high school Symphonic Band, high school jazz bands, and the middle school bands in Asheville City Schools. He received Bachelor degrees in Music Performance and Music Education from Appalachian State University and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from East Carolina University. Prior to coming to Asheville, he taught at Central Davidson Middle and High School. While at Central Davidson his bands received Superior Ratings in Grades II through Grade VI/ Masterworks at the District MPA and performed at local and regional concert band festivals. His middle school band performed at the Dixie Classic Festival and the NCMEA Conference in 2014 in a session/performance on musicality for the middle school band with guest clinician Paul Crider. His high school bands have performed as the featured guest ensemble at UNC-Greensboro and UNC-School of the Arts for fall side by side concerts with their Wind Ensembles. His concert bands have also competed at Dixie Classic Festivals in Virginia and Georgia where they received top honors awards, the Charleston Music Festival where the band received outstanding music awards, the Grand National Adjudicator’s Invitational at Atlanta Symphony Hall in 2019 where they were the highest scoring concert ensemble, and the National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall.

            In addition to his work at school he has served on staff of UNCG Summer Music Camp conducting both junior and senior bands, Cannon Music Camp at Appalachian State where he conducted the camp Symphonic Band, Mars Hill University Summer Music Camp, and has also been a conductor of the “Carolina Ambassador’s Honor Band” that tours Europe in the summer. He was recently selected to be on the staff of the “All American Band” which will be represented the United States in Normandy in the summer of 2023 for the D-Day Commemoration. He is a regular guest clinician for All County and All District Bands having conducted more than 50 clinics in recent years in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Alabama as well as the Symphonic Band at the University of South Carolina Band Clinic.

  Mr. Workman has been the recipient of the “First Year Teacher of the Year” award, was selected as the 2011-2012 "Teacher of the Year” at Central Davidson Middle as well as being selected as a finalist for the same award for the Davidson County School System. He was also selected to receive the "Ed Rooker Encore Award" from the American School Band Directors Association. In 2014 he was selected as School Band and Orchestra Magazine's "50 Directors Who Make a Difference" and in the fall of 2018 was featured educator in the Piedmont Triad's "Youth Impact Magazine." 

  Mr. Workman is actively involved the profession having served as the North Carolina Bandmasters Association President, Northwest District President, MPA Committee Chair, Honors Band Committee Chair, High School Auditions Host, Section Delegate for Band, 9-10 High School All State Clinic Chair, and currently as the Treasurer for the North Carolina All State Band. He is also a member of the National Band Association and the current State Chair for NBA in North Carolina. He was voted into membership in the the American School Band Director’s Association in 2014 and currently serves as the Region 4 Representative on the ASBDA National Executive Board. Last, he is a proud member and former Rho Tau Chapter President of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity.

Joe Figliolo, Assistant Director of Bands

Mr. Figliolo is a recent graduate of Appalachian State University finishing his Master of Music Performance - Instrumental Conducting degree with Dr. John Stanley Ross, Dr. Jason Gardner, and Dr. Alexandra Dee. He worked as a Graduate Assistant with the Appalachian Bands, including the Marching Mountaineers and the Appalachian Basketball Band, and was invited to guest conduct the Appalachian Wind Ensemble, the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra, and the Appalachian Symphony Band in concerts. He also served as one of the music directors and primary conductors for the Appalachian Concert Band.

As a performer, Mr. Figliolo has studied saxophone with Dr. Scott Kallestad and has performed with the Appalachian Saxophone Choir, Saxophone Studio, and the FFNbR Saxophone Quartet. In addition to his guest conducting appearances, he has performed as a saxophonist with the Appalachian Wind Ensemble each semester of his graduate studies. Mr. Figliolo graduated with his Bachelor in Music degree - with a Concentration in Music Education from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied with Mr. Jeff Fuchs and Dr. Evan Feldman. He was awarded the “Earl Slocum Band Award” in 2022 for “meritorious achievement with regard to musicianship, leadership, and academic excellence” for his contributions to the UNC Music Department. In 2024, he was selected as the alternate for the United States Air Force Band Diversity Fellowship. In November 2024, he will be presenting a clinic on Student Teaching at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference alongside his mentor teacher. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the North Carolina Music Educator Association, the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Pi Kappa Lambda Honors Society as well as an Honorary Brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and a Sigma Alpha Iota Friend of the Arts.
